29 November: Previewing Station Eleven

Objective:

I can preview a text to begin to make predictions about how I will see unit themes revealed throughout the novel (RL 2).

Entry Task:

As you come into class, grab a packet off the front table and your notebook and turn to your Post-Apocalyptic & Dystopian Literature notes that we completed yesterday. View the image and consider what it makes you think of and what it might have to do with post-apocalyptic literature. Be prepared to share.

What’s Going On:

Today we will spend some time previewing our unit text: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. First, spend some time individually focusing on our new unit themes. Rather than starting our unit with fully developed theme statements, we will be starting with big ideas that you will explore and expand into theme statements throughout our novel study.

Together we will then explore an article featuring the novel, as well as other post-apocalyptic texts, and the back-of-the-book synopsis. We will also check out copies of the book from the library today.

Exit Task:

Spend some time considering everything you have heard about the novel so far, and answer the last question on your packet by making a prediction about how you will see each of our big ideas throughout the book; also put a star next to the big idea you are most interested in focusing on at this time. Turn this into the bin once you are done and clean up around you.
